ARRESTING CRIME AT SPINNEY
Spinney has had to move from the early days in the 1970s of open frontage, with no walls in sight, to a situation now where the very latest remotely monitored CCTV, provided by RemGuard Visual Management, is being actively applied to protect the site from unwanted intruders, particularly overnight.
Comments Nick Holland, Spinney Motorcaravan’s Managing Director: “When we started the business, site security really was minimal but this was understandable as crime simply wasn’t a problem, back then organised gangs travelling out of the big cities to try to steal a motor home was simply unheard of – the same definitely isn’t true now!”
Seven years ago Spinney relocated to its current site at Cranage, which now employs around 25 people and is home to what is arguably the largest stock of new and used motor homes and touring caravans in the Northwest of England. With up to 200 examples on-site at any one time it is not surprising that security is taken so seriously.
Says Holland: “The move to our purpose-built site gave us an opportunity to design-in security measures from the start. We put in a series of walls, a personnel fence around the complete border of the site, and sturdy access gates – essential with a frontage of 200 metres.
By 2001 it was suggested to us by our insurers that CCTV would be a better option given the size of the site than a night watchman.”

The result is that today Spinney has adopted a remotely monitored event-driven CCTV system linked to RemGuard’s Remote Video Response Centre (RVRC) out of hours. So far Spinney’s experience with remotely monitored CCTV has been a positive one. The latest RemVu Aquila transmission equipment, which is connected to the CCTV cameras and detectors, is extremely flexible allowing images to not only be supplied to the RVRC but also giving Spinney the ability to monitor on-site activity locally when the dealership is open.
INTELLIGENT CCTV
According to Holland: “Already this intelligent CCTV solution has proven its worth helping to detect and crucially lead to the arrest of two thieves on site at night just before Christmas last year. In another incident images helped the police to catch two more individuals and, vitally, recover stolen caravans.
Holland realises that dealership site security is a constant battle: “At the end of the day it is all about early detection, catching individuals before they have the opportunity to cause damage so preventing disruption to business and keeping our all important insurance premiums under control.”
